Counterclaim for the Nobel Prize Seldom does anyone dare to criticize the Nobel Prize awards, but last week there was an outspoken objection to the Nobel medicine prize won by Dr. Selman Waksman for his discovery of streptomycin. Dr. Elmer Reinthaler of the National Agricultural College pointed out that his colleague, Dr. Albert Schatz, deserved just as much credit as Waksman. Dr. Schatz, who worked with Dr. Waksman, has already won a $125,000 lawsuit settlement plus legal recognition as the "co-discoverer of streptomycin." Dr. Reinthaler asked the Nobel Prize committee to reconsider its award and do justice to Dr. Schatz.
